Hair is a hard matrix, and the most demanding part of the analysis happens before the instrument ever sees the sample. Washing, weighing, digestion, extraction: this is where hair toxicology results are won or lost.
A control that carries the analyte on its surface can confirm that your instrument is reading correctly. It cannot tell you whether your extraction released what was actually locked inside the keratin.
Inside the keratin, not on top of it
TricoCheck® Controls are manufactured from authentic human hair from selected donors. Through Comedical’s incorporation process, target analytes are held within the keratin matrix — the same place they sit in a real specimen.
The difference is one you can observe in your own laboratory. Put a TricoCheck® control through your standard decontamination protocol: the wash solution comes back negative. Nothing rinses off, because nothing was sitting on the surface.
Wash it. Extract it. Test it. Just like a routine specimen.
One control, the whole process
Because the analytes are incorporated, TricoCheck® enters your workflow at the very first step instead of the last one. One control covers the entire chain:
- Decontamination — that your wash protocol removes contamination without stripping the analyte;
- Weighing — that your sample intake is consistent;
- Digestion / Extraction — that your method actually releases analytes from the matrix;
- Clean-up — that recovery holds through sample preparation;
- LC-MS/MS · GC-MS/MS — that the instrument quantifies correctly.

Tricocheck® Controls Products
It’s a product family designed for the verification of the entire analytical method, which includes specific Controls developed for confirmatory methods and screening techniques. It makes use of authentic hair that has been cut and washed, incorporated with specified substances and treated like routine samples.
All TricoCheck® Controls can be further decontaminated and extracted using techniques and products described in the literature and as defined by international guidelines for assays with clinical and medico-legal purposes.
Depending on the type of product and intended use, substance concentrations are provided based on class or individual analyte, and are accurately measured using immunoassay screening techniques, as well as LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS methods.
